What is a Birth Ally?In the United States we are experiencing a maternal health crisis. Women are dying in childbirth more than in any other developed nation and the majority of those women are black. Implicit bias, systemic racism, and lack of advocacy contribute to this crisis. Many of the deaths are preventable.
A Birth Ally is a doula wanting to improve maternal outcomes for women of color - someone to be an advocate and support person. |
In companioning with people of color in their childbearing, I want to be sure their voices are heard, their choices are respected, and their medical care is evidence based safe care.
Who can use a Birth Ally?
The World Health Organization recommends that all birthing people have the support of a doula for a safer birth experience. The idea of a Birth Ally is specifically to ensure this advantage for those who are at greater risk for negative outcomes in birth.
How a Birth Ally can help
- Preparing prenatally - education on birth options and informed choice in medical care
- Labor support - comfort measures, advocacy, supportive care
- Postpartum - resources and support for a more healthy and positive transition to parenthood.
