Johanna Wright, CD(DONA)
Hi! I am so glad you are here and I am excited to share a little about myself. I am a Certified Birth Doula and have been supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum since 2009 but I have been drawn to birth my entire life. My mom was always passionate about birth. She told me and my siblings our birth stories throughout our childhood, teaching us that birth is simultaneously normal and extraordinary. It is something to be embraced, not feared. I grew up on a farm here in North Carolina witnessing birth, learning all about it, and marveling in its mysteries. I read books about midwives and dreamed of becoming a midwife one day. It wasn't until the birth of my first child that I realized my desire to become a doula instead. I saw that what I wanted to do for other women, what I was made to do, was be the kind of strength, comfort, reassurance, and presence that my doula had been for me.
Through my own journey of motherhood I have had tremendous joys and also significant trials. I know what it's like to say good bye before you ever get to say hello. I know what it's like to leave a newborn in the NICU and try to fall asleep on the other side of the hospital, to watch as a newborn is wheeled into the operating room. I have also celebrated birthdays, seen first steps, and been utterly awed by the newness of every milestone. I have loved and laughed more deeply than I ever imagined possible. All of these experiences have added to my desire to support families as they journey through birth and parenting.
I have supported many different families in a variety of settings. I have supported births that are natural, medicated, cesarean, induction, VBACs, multiples, water birth, breech, and premature deliveries. I have worked with trauma survivors, clients on bedrest, and families going through NICU stays. I have been a part of home, hospital, and birth center births. No matter the circumstances, continuous labor support is important and beneficial. No matter what the birth plan is, a woman and her family deserve continuous, unconditional support and encouragement as they welcome their baby.
I consider it an honor to be able to serve families as they experience the miracle of childbirth and the joys or difficulties of parenting. By providing physical, emotional, and informational support, my hope is to contribute to a comfortable and positive birth experience for everyone involved. I strive to understand and equip the mother and her family during the course of her pregnancy, be a resource and support leading up to labor, a source of comfort and constant support during the birth, and also a helper in the hours, days, weeks or months following delivery.
I have extensive knowledge and experience in breastfeeding, as well as training in early lactation support. It is a joy for me to be able to assist with initial breastfeeding and to help families achieve their breastfeeding goals through support and problem solving.
I am blessed to be the mother of three amazing children. We love living close to family and helping on the farm I grew up on. When I'm not supporting my clients, I am busy supporting my kids' dreams and watching them grow.
